Banking apps, office documents, social media accounts, family photos, videos, passwords, OTP apps, health data and personal information are saved in the phone. Do this before changing your phone.
Before switching phones, it’s crucial to properly back up all your important data. This includes contacts, photos, videos, documents, call history, and app data. Also, ensure that both your old and new phones are fully charged to avoid any interruptions.
It is considered better to transfer data over Wi-Fi network because during this time a lot of downloading and uploading takes place, hence Wi-Fi is faster and more secure than mobile data.
Also, have the Wi-Fi password ready for your new phone. It’s worth noting that this guide is only for Android phones.
Don’t immediately wipe or factory reset your old phone unless absolutely necessary. Try to keep your old phone for at least a week or two. Many times banking apps or security apps authorize only one device and do not give access to the new phone unless the old phone is manually logged out.
Additionally, transferring apps like Google Authenticator can sometimes be problematic. Having your old phone handy can save you from a long wait at customer service.
Use Google’s free apps
Make the most of Google’s free apps and services to transfer or back up data on your Android phone. Google makes backing up photos, videos, and files incredibly easy.
Google Drive is a great option because it lets you upload your phone’s files to the cloud and download them to any device by logging in with the same Google account.
With the help of Google Photos, you can take cloud backup of every photo and video of your phone. Each user gets 15GB of free storage. If this falls short, additional storage can be purchased by purchasing a Google One plan.
How to transfer files manually
Step 1: Connect your old phone to your computer.
Step 2: Go to the notification panel and tap Charging this device via USB.
Step 3: Select File Transfer/Android Auto.
Step 4: Open your phone’s storage on your computer and copy the files.
Step 5: Now, remove your old phone and connect your new phone.
Step-6: Then select the same File Transfer mode and paste the files in the new phone.
Don’t forget to back up WhatsApp.
Users often assume that Google Backup will automatically save WhatsApp chats, but this is not the case. Data for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal must be saved separately through in-app backups.
You can back up your data to Google Drive by going to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup in WhatsApp.
Also, check if the backup has been updated recently. If you use a document vault, office app, or photo lock app, it’s important to carefully review their backup options.
How to transfer apps:
If you backed up your phone with your Google account, your new phone will automatically install previously used apps from the Play Store. Some apps auto-login, while others require you to log in again. If you don’t want to keep all the apps, you can select and install the ones you need from the Play Store library.
Use Android’s in-built backup option
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
Step 2: Select the Backup or Back up data option.
Step 3: Turn on the toggles for Photos & videos and Other device data.
Step 4: If you want to back up manually, tap Backup now.
On phones other than Pixel, this setting is located under Settings > Google > All services > Backup.
When you set up a new Android phone, Google will give you the option to restore data from the cloud.
