Google integrated chat with Gmail last year. This option was initially available for workspace users and was later made available for Gmail users on iOS, Android and web in May 2021. To switch for work from home, Slack s Realtime Chat and Microsoft Teams make communication easy.
However, Google Chat has to be activated for Gmail to use it. The process is different on browser and mobile device. Here is a simple guide on how to activate Gmail chat.
Tap the three dot icon in the top left corner. Scroll down and select "Settings".
Now select your account and navigate to “General”
Click on “Show the chat and spaces tabs” for Android. If you are using an iOS device, then turn on “Show the chat and spaces tabs”.
After this you will see the chat and space icons at the bottom of the screen.
Open your Gmail account and go to Settings
Then select "See all settings"
Then select Chat & Meet in the top menu
You will be given the option to select “Google Chat”, “Classic Hangouts” and “Off”
You ll then see a sidebar for your chats and rooms on the right side of your Gmail inbox.
To start a chat on mobile, simply tap on the chat icon and then on the “New Chat” popup in the lower right corner, type the person’s name here. You can also create a space. For web, click the plus sign in the corners of the chat or space box. You will see a dropdown menu, just like on mobile you have to type a name in the top field to chat with a person after which you will be taken to a small popup box.
