Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra will be the next Chief Election Commissioner. The government has approved his name for the post on Sunday, according to a media report. Now the order has stopped coming, which can be issued anytime. During his tenure, elections will be held for five Vidhan Sabha including UP, Punjab next year.
The elections to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur Legislative Assembly will take place in March next year under the leadership of the new Chief Election Commissioner. The term of the remaining assemblies, except UP, ends in March, while the term of the UP Legislative Assembly is ending on May 14.
Chandra will take over on April 13, a day after Sunil Arora stepped down. He was appointed as Election Commissioner before the Lok Sabha elections on 14 February 2019. He will hold this post till May 14, 2022.
Born on 15 May 1957, Sushil Chandra is a 1980 batch IRS officer. He did BTech from IIT Roorkee and LLB from Dehradun. Chandra will succeed him on April 13, a day after Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora retires. He will hold this post till May 14, 2022. Chandra was appointed Election Commissioner before the Lok Sabha elections on 14 February 2019.
Has been the chairman of CBDT
Prior to joining the poll panel, Sushil Chandra was the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He was the second such IRS officer after TS Krishnamurthy to be appointed Election Commissioner. Krishnamurthy was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner in 2004.
