Rakesh Sharma is a name that is known by every child of the country. We all read about Rakesh Sharma in school that he was the first astronaut of India. Rakesh Sharma was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. Rakesh Sharma was associated with skies and planes since childhood.

You will be surprised to know that Rakesh Sharma became a pilot in the Indian Air Force in 1970 at the age of just 21 years. The very next year, in 1971, a war broke out between India and Pakistan.

During this time, the then Government of India started thinking very seriously about the space program. Soviet Russia fully helped in this mission of India. After the completion of the mission plan, a search was started for such pilots, who would maintain India s honor even under the most harsh conditions.

India stamped the name of Rakesh Sharma for space travel, after which he went to Russia for training. On 2 April 1984, Rakesh Sharma flew for space by boarding the Soyuz T-11. After going to space, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also spoke to Rakesh Sharma. The former Prime Minister asked some questions to Rakesh, in which a question is still alive in the mind of the country. Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Sharma what India looked like from above. On this question of the Prime Minister, Rakesh Sharma said, - Sare Jahan Se Achcha.

Today is the birthday of Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go into space. He was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. He was the 138th astronaut of the world. He flew to the Soviet space station in Low Orbit and stayed in the space station for seven days.

He did life science related experiments in space and also did yoga. He slept in space with the rest of the astronauts for 9 hours and worked thereafter. During his 7 days and 21 hours in space, he conducted many experiments including silicum fusing test.
